Preparing for your Arrival

What to Bring

We are looking forward to your upcoming arrival to New Haven. Below is a list of what we ask each student to bring. Most importantly, we want each student's space to feel like an extension of home. Please bring items that will help your child feel more comfortable. We also ask that you do your best to stick to the number of each item below in order to prevent an overflow of too many things in each bedroom, and closet space. You will be permitted to switch out items as you come to visit, or mail other needed items you may have missed.

Packing List

Clothing

  • Pants or Shorts (finger-tip length) - 7
  • Shirts -10
  • Underwear/Bras - 10 pairs
  • Pajamas - 2 sets
  • Nice Dress/Skirt (knee length) or Nice Slacks and Top - 1
  • Jacket/Coats - 2 or 3
  • Socks (including some for P.E.) - 12 pairs
  • Swimsuit (one-piece) - 1
  • Dress Shoes - 1 pair
  • Work Shoes/Boots (to be outside with the animals) - 1 pair
  • Sandals - 1 pair
  • Sweatshirt/Sweatpants - 3
  • P.E. Shorts or Pants and Shirts - 3 or 4
  • Running/Work-out Shoes (not converse or skating shoes) - 1 pair
  • Sports Bras - 5

Personal Items

  • Towels - 2
  • Electric Razor - 1
  • Twin Sheets & Twin Comforter - 1 each
  • Personal Journal - 1

  • Stuffed Animals

Note: We provide toiletries, but you are welcome to send favorite brands, etc.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can my child bring makeup, hair styling tools, or jewelry to New Haven?

Yes. We encourage our students to bring personal items. They will have a personal space in a locked cabinet where these items will be stored.

What can I bring for my childs bed?

We want your bed to feel like home. You are welcome to bring sheets, or other bedding. Some students bring a foam topper for extra comfort. Sheets and bedding are also provided by New Haven if you choose not to bring your personal bedding.

Can I bring art or craft supplies?

Yes! We will have opportunities each week for downtime, and we encourage our students to utilize that time for personal interests. They are welcome to bring their supplies from home. These items will be stored in their bedroom.

Can I bring personal pictures or stuffed animals?

Yes! Each student will have a magnet board above their bed for personal pictures from home or art that they would like to display. They can also bring stuffed animals (2-3) or other items for their bed that help them feel connected to home.

What Not to Bring

The following items are not allowed and will be confiscated and sent home.

Glass (such as in picture frames)
Aerosol Sprays
Knives/Razors
Nitrisoxide Propellant (such as in mousse)
Mouthwash
Fluoride Wash
Personal Electronics
Cigarettes
